There are so many complicated factors to take into account in order for everything to run smoothly and meet everyone\u2019s expectations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when a family has a child with special needs or distinct sensitivities, the planning process can seem extra daunting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But please don\u2019t be discouraged! Considering a few things in advance can make all the difference in how your trip turns out. Of course, nothing will ever go 100% according to the plan\u2014but a little bit of forethought can go a long way!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This resource will walk you through what to consider when planning a family trip that all of you will be able to enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Making Your Preliminary Plans:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more you consider and account for during your initial planning stage, the fewer problems you\u2019ll likely face down the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preemptively learning about the places and activities you\u2019ll be spending your time on before you ever leave your house can help prepare you for whatever little surprises await.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first thing you should do when picking out a place to travel to is research the following, each of which is crucial to your vacation plans but can be a potential source of difficulty when traveling with children:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Available activity options<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hotel and other facility options<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hospitals and health care options nearby<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airport and\/or other travel logistics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Available methods of transportation at your destination<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Keeping Things Balanced When Planning Activities:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to keep in mind that your child might have a very different perception of certain things than you do as an adult\u2014especially if your child has special needs or distinct sensitivities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your mission at this stage is to try and balance the needs and expectations of everyone in the family, particularly:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting to experience the things that interest your whole family, without making your child uncomfortable or excessively bored<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding time for family companionship and bonding, while also giving your child opportunities for autonomy and a degree of independence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important point to keep in mind when making your plans is that you should <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use the trip as a means to expand your child\u2019s comfort zone. A completely new environment can be overwhelming. If you push your child too much, it may lead to a meltdown and impact everyone\u2019s enjoyment of the trip<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try some of the following during the planning stage:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Involve your child in the research process. This will help them get excited about the trip and reduce anxiety about upcoming changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take your child\u2019s interests and sensitivities into account when planning activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call local hotels and transportation companies to find out what kinds of accommodations they offer. Reach out and ask what kinds of insurance they accept. You can also obtain Sunflower products to help identify your child as someone with a hidden disability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If applicable, consider purchasing fast passes for attractions you will be visiting so that waiting in large crowds for long periods of time will not be necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a schedule; outline the timing of various activities and factor in how this will affect mealtimes and bedtime.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a backup plan ready in case your preferred activities don\u2019t go well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decide how you will handle your child\u2019s struggles if they manifest during the trip.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Getting Ready To Leave For Your Destination<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weeks and days leading up to the trip can be very exciting\u2014and can also be another important step in ensuring everything will go well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>To get your child excited, and also reduce potential anxiety or wariness over the anticipation of a new experience, try some of the following:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start a fun countdown to the departure date.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to your child about the place you\u2019ll be visiting. Use visual tools such as photos and videos so everything will feel more familiar upon arrival.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit the airport to give your child a sense of how it works and what they might encounter.
